Omega 3 Fatty Acids: The New Superhero of
Nutrients!
Research
Proves Their Ability to Suppress Inflammation is
Powerful.
More research is
confirming that systemic inflammation is at the heart of a
variety of serious illnesses including coronary artery disease
(CAD), Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimers. Coronary artery
disease has been linked to stroke as well.
Why?
It is now known that inflammation damages blood vessels by
creating lesions in the vessel walls, particularly in the heart
arteries. The body, in response to this, attempts to repair the
damage by forming plaque in the lesion. As this plaque
accumulates, artery wall vessels become narrow and disease to
the vessel progresses. Hence risk for heart attack and stroke
increase.
The most important components of Omega 3's are DHA and EPA,
found in highest concentrations in coldwater fish. They are
very potent mitigators of inflammation and will thin the blood.
As such they reduce clot formation (important in the prevention
of plaque formation in CAD) and should be used carefully if one
is taking higher doses of Vitamin E or blood thinning agents.
Omega 3's are found in coldwater fish, canola oil, flax seed,
walnuts, soy beans and leafy green vegetables.
Omega 3's have also been shown in research studies to
reduce depression and joint pain.
In a study conducted by UPMC neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, MD
nearly 60% of subjects in the study who took between 1.2 and
2.4 grams (1200 and 2400 mg) of Omega 3 oils rich with EPA
& DHA discontinued their anti-inflammatory medication. This
study mirrored the results of a prior study of its kind.
Eighty-eight percent (88%) were impressed with the results
enough to continue using the supplements after the conclusion
of the study.
Omega 6 fatty acids, when ingested in abundance, will lead to
an increase in inflammation. These compounds are found in
vegetable oils (sunflower, safflower), nuts, and especially
fried and processed foods. Thus over-consuming them is not
particularly healthy.
Previous recommendations were to consume 1 Omega 3 for every 2
Omega 6 that you eat. However, new research recommendations
suggest a 1 to 20 ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6.
Other factoids:
Two grams of fish oil per day is needed to reduce blood
pressure and triglycerides.
At least 500 mg per day can reduce CAD risk and reduce
cognitive (brain function) decline.
Two 4 oz. servings of cold water fish (salmon, makerel, trout)
per week are recommended.
Considering the benefits of Omega 3 supplementation leads one
to realize the necessity of preventing diseases of lifestyle
and natural aging. For some diet is adequate, though for others
supplementation is a favorable choice.
I've been using Omega 3's now for nearly 7 weeks. Results? I've
had "half" a headache in that time frame and almost zero neck
discomfort from exertion/strain of having to be bent over
working on patients than I previously had. This is the second
time I've enjoyed this result from using Omega 3's.
While I can't guarantee the same results for anyone, the
benefits in the areas of inflammation are unquestionable.
