Coffee May Reduce the Risk of
Stroke.
Pour yourself another cup as a new study suggests that
regular coffee drinking seems to reduce the risk of
stroke.
A twelve year long study of 23,000 adults showed that coffee
consumption was inversely proportional to the risk of
stroke.
Reported coffee drinkers had a 27% lower RISK of
stroke compared with adults who never drank coffee, however the
greater the amount of coffee consumed was not associated with
greater risk reduction. That is to say, higher
amounts of coffee consumed did not equate to greater
protection.
These finding were consistent across
the sexes, age groups, socio-economic and education level,
smoking/alcohol use and phyical activity levels. That
means it did not matter what a person's other habits were like
or their personal background, coffee consumption was associated
with lower risk. And it did not matter if the coffee was
regular or decaf, instant or ground.
While this isn't new news, it does confirm what was
previously seen in other studies, however researchers still do
not know why this relationship exists, or even if it is indeed
causative.
Weaker studies have shown associations between coffee
consumption and lower risk for diabetes and heart disease.
So, there are no official suggestions that people drink
coffee to lower their risk of stroke.
But why do you see me with a cup all the time?
